Why won’t we be warned about being warmed?

This picture could be of Rockhampton today, or Ballarat in September or Charleville last March. It's actually a town in Pakistan taken about 6 months ago. 20 million people were directly effected by that flood. 4.6 million Chinese people were evacuated from their homes in May 2010 when their country flooded. 23 000 people were evacuated due to flooding in Central Europe at the same time. Scary eh? Honestly I'm not really scared about it because I just can't be bothered. Of course...

Taiwan’s news explains our election with animation.

Just home from handing out GetUp policy score cards at a polling booth in St Lucia, Brisbane, where about half a dozen young Liberals are dressed as Greens and handing out fake how to vote cards. A disgrace and just a shame. I did pall up with a lovely young Lib called Rowan who was handing his gear out with me so I'm not completely jaded by my first experience of doing this sort of thing, but I am tired and feeling pretty edgy. My friend Joseph Keller has brightened my day right up though,...

Prime Minister Julia is giggling!

Prime Minister Julia is buggered. It's been a long couple of months for her, and quite unexpectedly, Tony Abbott has managed to change a lot of minds. Remember when he was a bit of a joke? I remember when John Howard was a total laugh. He was a walking punchline. Both times the Coalition elected him leader the whole country chuckled, "as if you'd vote for him!" and then they did for ten years. It was only six weeks ago that TAbbott was a bit of a laugh. He may well end up representing us...

Dear Meshel, please post this email, share it, forward it and add a few reasons of your own The campaign is going from strength to strength. People contact the office everyday to offer support or ask how they can vote Green this election. We’re almost there, but we haven’t made history yet. That’s why these next few days are critical. We need you to tell all of your friends, family, neighbours and colleagues why you’re voting Green on Saturday, and suggest they consider voting Green...

Lovely little vid: the facts about asylum seekers.

I'm sure I'm preaching to the converted now, but maybe you can sit someone else still for a couple of minutes if you think they need to understand the reality of the "boat people" story. It's funny you know, because we Australians are infamous for our lack of respect for our politicians and yet, at the very time they have the most to gain by manipulating us, we seem to believe every (negative) thing they say. I expect fear mongering from the people who brought you the "babies overboard" lie, but...

Private and confidential with Lehmo

Lehmo is that hilarious guy on Before the Game for those of you in the AFL states of Australia. He's the Lehmo bit of Brig and Lehmo on Mix 1011 for those of you in Melbourne. He's a comedian who's worked all over the world, for those of you all over the world, and he was once an accountant which is something everyone can enjoy. He and I had a very private and confidential conversation via Direct Message on twitter regarding campaign 2010. I decided to publish that conversation on the grounds...

TAbbott ignores prize winner/former “boat person”.

This just in from GetUp! Yesterday Tony Abbott sent a campaign email entitled, "We will stop the boats." Ahead in the polls, he's announced that the Pacific Solution will return on day one of an Abbott Government. It seems Tony Abbott has a lot to say on refugees, except to those he promised to meet in June after GetUp members won a charity auction. GetUp members chipped in more than $16,000 to help secure the winning bid in a charity auction for a surfing lesson and meeting with Tony Abbott....

A Message from Bob Brown.

I saw an episode of Insight on SBS a couple of weeks ago in which Australian Greens leader Bob Brown guested. Some young voters who couldn't get their heads around the purpose of The Greens, and the importance of the Australian Senate were also featured. After about 45 minutes of discussion, one guy was asked if anything had been cleared up for him. He kind of screwed up his face and said that he still didn't understand why Bob Brown couldn't be Prime Minister. While that boy's problem is an...

The Scary Truth about Asylum Seekers.

Why are TAbbott and J-Gill talking so much about "boat people"? Why was it the issue that dominated the one and only debate of campaign 2010? If you think it's because it's a genuine issue above and beyond water, climate change, the two wars we are fighting, marrital inequality, indigenous lifespan inequality, education, etc, etc, etc, then have a listen to this interview with Jessie Taylor who is a lawyer and refugee advocate and have your mind blown by the reality. Hear the interview here.
