Thankyou for being such a powerful, strong and resilient voice Meshel. I'm sorry that you had to experience the backlash that you did. It takes a brave person to stand up and be heard in the face of ugliness. Thankyou for making our country a little bit more beautiful.

I've been amazed since I came here 7 years ago how frequently I have experienced people express racist comments and incorrect sentiments about aboriginals. When I try politely disagreeing I am accused of having no sense of humour - or else that I should go back where I came from. Which sort of makes me laugh. Some things that I think are needed... a campaign that publicises the facts rather than the regurgitated myths about aboriginals (I swear there are people I've met who think every aboriginal gets given land, houses and several tens of thousands of dollars a year from the government). Engaging more high profile people to talk appropriately about the issue. Maybe something a bit like the White Ribbon campaign where people sign a pledge to challenge ignorance and hate towards aboriginals.

People in official roles, whether government or opposition, need to admit there is a problem.

Hi Meshel,
I mentioned on twitter that I'm interested in your project. I'm part of the UTS Indigenous Collective, at least 2 other members including our indigenous officer Alison are also interested. the collective email is Indig.at.UTS@gmail.com send Alison an email and maybe we can arrange something.

Also we've all had bad experiences at uni in regards to how Indigenous issues are approached. It's great that uni's teach indigenous content but when done the wrong way it can result in creating more racism.

Thanks Meshel,
I've long been an admirer of yours and what you tweeted and blogged on Survival Day/Australia Day only solidified my opinion of you. It takes a brave heart to stand and say that they have been wronged and an even braver one to point out those wrongs and show support to the oppressed whilst being a member of the privileged part of society that is STILL participating in the oppression. You said it from within the blanket of privilege, you dared to speak of the emperor and the lack of clothing. For that you were unjustly vilified and it saddens and pains me that those of us who dare to speak out about a variety of issued are subject to bullying and abuse to try to silence us.
The Indigenous people of Australia deserve better from this country's government and from those who have settled their land and they will keep on pressing for recognition, recompense and reconciliation. They can't do it without us coming from the other side to meet them, though. I'll be proud to stand beside you one that journey forward for this nation. Jill

Wow- I can't believe that nearing 20 yrs since Mabo people are still repeating the 'they will take my house' nonsense. I recently saw 'I Am Eora' as a part of the Sydney Festival. I found that learning the story of specific community leaders changed how I could articulate my belief in reconciliation. Really anything written by Anita Heiss is worth a read. Take care.

I follow you on twitter Meshel and was completely unaware of what was happening. I'm not ignorant, I moved to Saudi Arabia nearly two weeks ago.

While driving with my husband we caught on BBC radio that something had happened involving the Prime Minister. As soon as we got home, I jumped on the net and twitter to try and find out exactly what had happened. Do you know what? I still don't really know. There is so much misinformation, opinion and biased reporting that I'm still not sure.

What I do know is the awful feeling I had reading the disgusting and blatant racism voiced through tweets and on the mamamia website. You did deserve the response you received. It was atrocious.

I know I haven't been away long but I miss Australia. I'll be here for at least three years and at the moment I'm constantly thinking about home, our way of life, freedom of choice etc. I could not believe the utter rubbish being voiced by some Australians. It made me embarrassed and revolted.

Keep being you Meshel.
